Investing With Boxing Picks, Week 63: A Heavyweight Step Up

There is a lot of great boxing action this weekend, but we didn't find a lot of good betting opportunities, except a battle between two undefeated fringe contender heavyweights.

George Kambosos shook up the most dynamic weight class in boxing with his terrific upset victory over Teofimo Lopez last weekend.  This weekend brings us two more top tier lightweights in fairly competitive matchups as Devin Haney takes on JoJo Diaz and Gervonta Davis battles Isaac Cruz.  The lines are too wide to attract a bet from us on those fights but there is no way we won’t be tuning in after witnessing last weekend’s scintillating action.  Here’s where our portfolio currently stands:

Boxing Betting Annualized Rate of Return (since 9/17/20):  33.11%

Mutual Funds Annualized Rate of Return (since 9/17/20):    22.74%

Boxing Betting Return On Investment (ROI):   11.70%

This week we’re betting a relatively obscure undercard fight on Triller’s Thursday night show, Cassius Chaney vs George Arias.  This fight is not likely to create any ripples in the heavyweight landscape, but it does represent a huge opportunity for both fighters.  They are each facing the toughest fighter they’ve ever met in a professional ring and the winner will likely reap a modest financial reward in his subsequent fight.  Arias is an undersized heavyweight who at various times has looked like he wanted to be a boxer.  In other fights he has come forward and looked to fight on the inside.  But it seems that he doesn’t have the quickness or length to be effective as a boxer against top competition, and he doesn’t possess enough power to be truly dangerous as an aggressive action fighter.  However, he may not need to be great in either posture against Chaney, who only took up boxing after playing collegiate basketball.  Chaney looks the part, he’s a big heavyweight and a coordinated athlete.  He’s sparred against top heavyweights and has been trained by Kevin Cunningham, and now Stephen Edwards.  We’ve seen him use the jab to control range and look to land the right hand, and we think that’s the biggest factor in this fight.  He’s got a 6″ height advantage and likely a sizable reach advantage and that may be enough.  This is the kind of fight we like to watch, even if it’s not a marquee fight.  We don’t really know what will happen here but it’s an important fight for both guys and they’ll hopefully bring their best performance.  We’re going with Chaney.
