Investing With Boxing Picks, Week 40: We’re On A Good Run

There's no shortage of boxing action this weekend. The main events don't look to be competitive matches, but the undercards provide some betting opportunities.

We kept things rolling last week when Jose Pedraza fought a disciplined fight and never let Julian Rodriguez get comfortable.  We haven’t had a losing week since early April and our portfolio currently stands as follows:

Boxing Betting Annualized Rate of Return (since 9/17/20):  71.24%

Mutual Funds Annualized Rate of Return (since 9/17/20):    34.31%

Boxing Betting Return On Investment (ROI):   22.19%

The first fight we’ll look at this week is on the undercard of Saturday’s ESPN card, Isaac Dogboe vs Adam Lopez.  We think this will be the best fight of the weekend, a well matched contest between two aggressive fighters.  Dogboe is making his second start at 126 following consecutive losses to Emanuel Navarrete.  He’ll bore in and try to stay on Lopez’s chest, working with hooks and overhand rights.  He doesn’t have concussive power, especially at 126, but he’s well conditioned and will be looking to grind Lopez down and outwork him down the stretch.  Lopez will have a 5″ reach advantage and will likely try to use it in stretches.  But he likes to scrap and he’s never been able to avoid trading shots at some point in his fights.   Dogboe will put him on his back foot and it’s not in his nature to move laterally and jab his way to a decision, even though Buddy McGirt will almost certainly be repeatedly asking him to box.  Even though Lopez doesn’t have a high knockout ratio, he can crack a little bit and could affect Dogboe with the right hand.  We’re expecting an entertaining and closely contested fight.  The line opened wider with Dogboe as the favorite but it has tightened up over the last few days.  We’re going with Lopez.

We’re also betting an undercard fight on PBC’s Showtime card on Saturday, Angelo Leo vs Aaron Alameda.  Alameda is coming off a decent showing against Luis Nery.  We expect him to fight on the back foot looking to pick Leo off as he comes forward.  He exchanged with Nery at times but he’ll be focused more on nullifying Leo’s offense than landing his own.  Leo starts slow at times but he’s fairly good at cutting the ring off and staying close enough to make you feel pressured even if he’s not landing.  And if you start to tire, he’ll rake you to the body and test your mettle.  He couldn’t stay close enough to Stephen Fulton to get any quality work done, but we think he’ll have a much easier time finding Alameda.  But we will not be surprised if Alameda wins some early rounds and makes him earn it.  We like Leo by decision or late stoppage.
